Legal Sports Betting Options in the US
Sports betting has become a billion dollar industry. With the explosion in professional and college sports betting, law regulating bodies such as the NCAA have felt the need to step into the sports betting business and create rules and laws that will protect bettors from fraud and other unethical acts. One such law is the “No False or Misleading Advertising Policy” which was recently approved by the Illinois State Board of Sports Administration. This policy essentially prohibits sportsbooks from claiming or guaranteeing certain results. It also requires that all wagering odds are clearly posted at all sportsbooks.
Illinois is not the only state to have taken a stance against sports betting. Several other states are considering similar statutes. In addition, several federal and local laws have been proposed that would impose even more restrictions on wagers on sporting events. These include proposed bans on sports betting on college and professional sports, mandatory reporting of sports betting odds and sports betting statistics, and even limitations on sports betting revenues.
The No False or Misleading Advertising and Reporting Policy (hereinafter called the NFAIRP) makes it illegal for any sportsbook to claim or guarantee any result, game or event as being “pre-planned”. It specifically covers all advertising materials related to sports betting, including but not limited to, promotional material, signage, and employee apparel. The policy does not apply to all marketing activities conducted by a sportsbook either. Some sportsbooks can operate their business without violating the NFAIRP. For example, a sportsbook can set its own odds and keep those odds completely confidential if they so choose.
The Illinois NFAIRP makes it illegal for a sportsbook to tell anyone outside of its employees and affiliated websites that the sportsbook is conducting betting. That includes all forms of media, including newsprint, billboards, radio, and Internet. However, the Illinois law does not cover gambling, which are defined as “poker gaming”, and online sports betting. This law does not affect the rights of retailers to sell tickets or lottery tickets outside of the site. Although the NFAIRP makes gambling and lottery ticket sales illegal, it is not intended to prevent individuals from wagering or participate in activities related to those activities. That is why you should carefully review all of the legal definitions before making a bet on any sporting events.
In Maryland, the state legislature passed a bill to allow sports betting in the state. The House of Representatives passed the bill by a vote of 401-6 and the Senate approved it by a vote of 7-4. Although the legislature overrode the wishes of the voters, many residents are still confused about what the new law actually says. The bill allows only licensed establishments to conduct sports betting, not everyone who wishes to bet can get one. It also requires a person to be a resident of the state for at least six months in order to be allowed to participate in sports betting.
In the coming months, the United States federal government may start allowing states to become involved in sports betting once again. Although there are currently no official plans to legalize sports betting, both the NCAA and the NFL have publicly stated that they would support the idea if it passes into legislation. Legalization may come as a surprise to many sports betting enthusiasts who were hurt by the prior legal sports betting bans in the United States. The New Jersey legislature recently passed a law legalizing sports betting, but critics are waiting for the state’s regulatory body to determine whether the law violates any international agreements.
Gambling is a popular topic across the world, and some international countries, such as Ireland and Malta, have taken measures against sports betting in their respective countries. For example, in Malta the possession of a bookmaker license is required before a person can place a bet on any game. A person can obtain a license from an existing bookmaker that has been operating in the country for at least three years. Malta has also implemented a zero tolerance policy with regards to match fixing, and several bookmakers have already closed their businesses in the country due to the laws that have been implemented.
Gambling has been a controversial issue throughout the United States for decades. Today, most major cities have at least one sports betting parlor that residents can visit to place a bet on any given sporting event. The legality of sports betting in the United States has remained unclear over the years, and most cities across the country do not allow gambling by adults. With the increase in popularity of online gambling in the past decade, many illegal sports betting sites have popped up around the country, and some cities, like Lake Norman, have created new ordinances that ban gambling by adults in the area.
